A grant of £25000 was made by Power to Change during the summer of 2020 which enabled the shop to withstand the C-19 pandemic and ensure that the shop is still able to open from 8am to 1pm each day (it closes at 12 noon on Sunday).
The loss of full opening hours, fewer visitors to the village and the hungry students who would normally be at the Field Centre have all taken their toll on shop finances, and this grant has redressed the balance.
The funds were used to buy stock and allowed an investment in a bread oven. The shop now offers freshly baked breads, pastries and pasties. A second hand electric van was purchased just before the country locked down again after Christmas 2020, which is used for trips to purchase stock and can be used for deliveries in the village.”
We have been shortlisted in the South West Best Rural Start Up Business and The Best Rural Social Enterprise, Charity or Community Project categories of the Rural Business Awards 2019/20!
The winner of each category will be announced on the 25th October at the Royal Agricultural University so wish us luck!
We have secured a grant from the Community Trade Up Programme which is supported by Power to Change in partnership with the School for Social Entrepreneurs. The grant is for up to £10,000 of matched funding provided that we improve our trading figures by that amount over the next year. It also provides training which is aimed at increasing sales, and Tracie Lange is currently attending the sessions in Truro.
Our shop won the Community Story of the Year Award last year and the Plunkett Foundation has made a short video about our shop, click here to see it.
We regularly arrange community events to promote and support Slapton Village Community Shop. Most especially now to fund the costs of bringing the long term site for our wonderful community shop to fruition!
Come along to help support your new Community Shop - and have fun too! Please check below for our calendar of upcoming events.
If you want more details on any of these, if you would like to take part or help in any way, or if you have any questions at all please contact us via the button below.

Over 180 original paintings, prints and artworks went up for sale by Auction by well known local auctioneer Charles Wreford-Brown.
Held in Slapton Village Hall, the Art Auction (which was very well attended) has raised funds in aid of the Slapton Village Community Shop relocation fund.
Lots of residents, visitors, art lovers and supporters of Slapton Community Shop attended and made the most of their chance to buy some fantastic art, have a LOT of fun, and support our wonderful Community Shop in the process!
A huge thank you goes out to everyone who attended, and to everyone who volunteered on the day (and in the run up) to help make this event a great success.
Please note the shop and community are following strictly all guidelines and procedures set by the government.
